NEW YORK WATERTOWN Ice Storm - 1998 Alexie Velazquez THE ICE STORM When people think of Upstate New York winters, they usually think of snow—feet of it, piled high against the door. But the winter of 1998 was different. It wasn't the snow that stopped the world; it was the ice. Photography is often about capturing light, but in January 1998, the landscape of Northern New York captured the light all on its own. This photograph from my collection was taken by my husband in Watertown, New York, during what people called the "Great Ice Storm of '98." Unlike a blizzard, where snow can be plowed and moved, this storm coated the region in up to four inches of solid ice. Looking at it now, the scene is hauntingly beautiful—a world turned into a crystal palace. But those of us who lived through it remember that the beauty was dangerous.
